Montreal is one of the most walkable cities in the world. That said, most of us won’t be walking to get there, so knowing about other means of transportation is helpful. Montreal has numerous options, including an international airport, a railway station, an underground tunnel network, extensive public transport. You can also drive if you’re inclined.
Air - Montréal’s airport, the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), is serviced by both international and domestic carriers, including American, Delta, United, British Airways and Air Canada. Third-busiest airport in Canada, YUL also is a US Border Preclearance site and offers daily international flights from 5 continents and serves 58,000 travellers daily. You can find more information here. A free shuttle service to the Gare Central/Central station allows for easy use of the Metro across greater Montréal. The 747 Airport Shuttle Bus runs between the airport and downtown Montreal for $11.
Rail - Train travel to Montréal is also an option. Served by VIA Rail and Amtrak, travellers from across Canada and the US arrive in Montréal at the Gare Central/Central Station and from there enjoy a free shuttle service to YUL as well as access to other transportation services. Visit here and here for more information.
Metro - The Gare Central/Central Station is also served by the Montreal Metro, a commuter rail service connecting 68 stations in the greater Montreal area, including Laval and Longueuil. The train station closest to the Palais is the Place-d’Armes, on the Orange Line. Metro transfers are included in the fare unless you exit and re-enter a Metro station. Transfer stations are clearly marked and do not require exiting to transfer. Metro runs until 1 AM. More information is available here.
Underground Tunnel System - The RESO, or Montreal's Underground City, is a vast network of 32 kilometers of climate-controlled tunnels and walkways beneath downtown Montreal that connects office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, and the metro system. It is a major tourist attraction with shops, restaurants, and public spaces like art installations and fountains. More information can be found here.
Bus - While the Metro is the backbone of the Montréal transit system buses are also available. Buses 55 and 120 will both take you to the Palais. Buses go to the airport, the West Island, and other further destinations. Bus and Metro systems are linked and include a bus transfer. Buses run 24/7 but on a lighter night schedule. Bus waits are 5 -30 minutes long depending on time of day and route popularity. More information on buses can be found here.
Ride Shares - Uber and Lyft both operate in Montréal. Taxis are available and some popular destinations have fixed prices, sometimes cheaper than ride shares. Taxis accept Visa and Mastercard.
